How to Select A Hosting Service -
Non-virtual or Virtual
Do You Need Non-virtual or Virtual Hosting?
Some Web hosting companies offer non-virtual and virtual hosting.
- Non-Virtual Hosting.
- The hosting company will place your Web files in sub-directories under their domain name. The advantage of this hosting plan is that you don't need to worry about applying for a domain name. The disadvantages are you have less account flexibility and lower "Web visibility."
- I don't recommend this hosting plan if you are hosting a site for your business. Nevertheless, it may be appropriate for individuals who want Web presence, but don't need their own domain name.
- Virtual Hosting.
- The hosting company will place your Web files in sub-directories under your own domain name.
If your goal is to build an online business, then it makes sense to get yourself a domain name. Domain names aren't free.
- In November 1999 domain name registration was opened to competition around the world and the cost for registering a domain name has been dropping. Unless you are willing to shop around, figure the cost to be around $70 for the first two years and $35 for each year thereafter. Some hosting companies will take care of the registration paperwork for you for free, others will charge you. You will still have to pay the $70 to get your domain established.
