How to Select A Hosting Service - Platform
Do You Have a Platform Preference?
As mentioned previously, Web hosting companies store your files on computers they call servers. They sometimes call these servers platforms. When you search for a host, they will offer you one or more of the following platforms (which is based on a server's operating system):
- UNIX
-
UNIX is a powerful network operating system. It's the most used platform and is the most secure environment available. Unmatched processing power combined with its powerful operating system stability makes UNIX the best choice for many applications. Unlike the Microsoft NT environment, UNIX uses no GUI (Graphical User Interface) and is faster than most other server platforms.
- Windows NT
- The number of Web hosting providers using Microsoft's Windows NT is increasing. Many powerful business applications developed by Microsoft and other vendors run on NT servers. Windows NT hosting only necessary if you require MS SQL 7, ColdFusion, ASP, or Access Databases. If you don't require these features, I recommend you select a UNIX hosting package. You'll get more bang for your buck!
