How to Select A Hosting Service - Other Factors

What About Data Back-up?
If you process orders, make sure your host backs up your order file on a separate server, either instantaneously or at the end of each day. This will ensure you don't lose any orders, just in case the server where your Website is stored crashes.
Did You Check The Speed of Transfer?
Most hosting companies will say that their connections use T1 or T3 lines. Ping it yourself. The Ping (Packet Internet Groper) is a networking utility that is used to query another system or host machine to ensure that the system is active. The lower the response time the more reliable and faster the connection A high response time often means a slow or unstable connection. Just enter the domain name of the hosting site and record the download time. Try to access four or five of your potential Web host's sites during the busiest time of the day. Perform several tests for each potential host. Average your results.
How many Connections Do They Have?
Make sure your provider has multiple connections to the Internet.
What about Customer Support?
Most Web hosts offer both e-mail and telephone support while others are available only via e-mail. E-mail support works fine. I wouldn't consider a company who doesn't offer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (24/7) technical support. Plus, you should be able to contact them via E-mail and telephone.
Is There a Minimum Commitment?
Many companies offer significant discounts for a 3, 6 or 12-month contract. My advice - don't sign a long term contact until you are familiar with the services that the company provides. The best solution is to sign up for a month to month option, then switch to a 3, 6 or yearly option.
What Payment Methods Are Allowed?
Some companies only accept checks while others may only accept credit cards.
What about Billing Policies?
Many Web Hosts allow you to pay annually, others require a 3, 6 or 12 month commitment. Before signing up for any service, be certain you understand the company's specific billing policies.
What About Cancellation Policies?
Find out up front how to cancel your account. Most Web hosts are easy to deal with, others could make it difficult to cancel your account.
