Reduce Download Time - Large Images

If the image is particularly large, break it into segments and load the segments into a table using the table tag. The links below provide free tools to assist you:

  • Online Image Splitter. Makes it easier to slice images and download the HTML tags for pasting the slices back together. It also provides options for optimizing the sliced images and quickly creating navigational bars with mouse-over effects.
  • Image splitter in action. The above Online Image Splitter is used to split Polly The Parrot in quarters.
  • Or, you can download a freeware copy of ShoeString's PictureDicerTM for Windows. You can chop any image file into several smaller images. It also generates the HTML for a table to contain the partial images and display them so they appear as the original uncut image. Tip: If your original image has more than 256 colors, reduce it to 8 bit colors before dicing it.

Create thumbnails. By using thumbnails of graphics on your Webpage, you can reduce download time for your visitors.
