Do Not Spam Search Engines
|
What is search engine spamming? Practices that are dishonest and
mislead search and indexing programs to give a page a ranking it
does not deserve.
|
No one likes spam e-mail. Webmasters who send out spam e-mail
often face a backlash from those on the receiving end. Search
engines are no different. Sites that spam search engines degrade
the value of search engine listings. The majority of search
engines have decided to fight back.
Examples of engine spamming or Spamdexing?
- Do not hide text. Attempting to hide text on a webpage,
either with small text or invisible text (by making the color of
the text the same as the background) are considered as forms of
spamming by search engines.
- Avoid bridge pages. Bridge pages are Webpages which have no
content and just serve as a "bridge" from a blank page to the
real page. Search engines don't like bridge pages.
- Don't use the Meta refresh tag. If your site has moved, add
your new URL to the search engines and delete the old URL; avoid
using the META refresh tag.
- Most search engines also consider one or more of the
following tricks as spamming:
- Misleading or repeated words,
- Page does not match search engine description,
- Cloaked page,
- Deceptive redirects,
- Doorway pages,
- Duplicate site or pages.
Penalies for spamming search engines can range from severe
reduction in the rating of your site in relation to the user's
query, to complete removal from the search engine's index.
- Google wants you to help them eliminate spam, by reporting it
to them Google.
- Yahoo also wants you to help them eliminate spam, by
reporting it to them Yahoo!
spam.
