What's a Web host? Is the essentially the placement of your Website onto the Internet to a Web server. Once your site is on a server, anyone with Internet access can look at your Website - from anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.

There are two types of Web hosting services available: commercial and free. As you might expect, you get more from a Web hosting service you pay for (commercial), than you do from a free hosting service.

What's the catch with a free hosting service? To pay for the costs incurred with hosting your Website for free, most free hosting services will display banner ads, pop-up advertising on each page and/or send you e-mail about special offers they are promoting.

The sites below will host your Website for free. Some sites allow free hosting only for your business, a non-profit organization or will host only personal Websites. But, before you select any free hosting service, read their acceptable use policy (rules) first.

How much Web space will I need? Most people greatly overestimate the amount of Web space they will need. Based on my experience, the average Website will only require 2 to 3 MB. Remember, it's not the amount of Web space you can use - it's your content that matters!

00server.com. Provides members 20 MB of Web space for your personal or business site. A banner is displayed on your pages. FTP feature.

0catch.com. Provides members 100 MB of free sub-domain and domain hosting for your personal or business site. A banner is displayed on your pages. FTP feature.

50Megs.com. Provides members 50 MB of Web space for your personal or business site. A banner is displayed on your pages. FTP feature.

50webs.com. Provides members 60 MB of Web space for your personal or business site. Zero banners. FTP feature.

1hwy.com. Provides members 20 MB of free Web space hosting for your personal or business site. A banner is displayed on your pages. FTP feature.

110mb.com. This free host offers many advanced features, such as PHP and MySQL 5. FTP feature (limit of 50 at one time). They provide you 2GB (2000MB) of storage space and a limit of 100GB (100000MB) of bandwidth per month. No banners!! They have a ticket system for support but, the best way to get help is via their forum.

Above World. Provides members 25 MB of Web space, will also host all foreign domains (ie. .nu, .uk, .to etc.). Provides an ez-web builder (no html knowledge required), template based html builder, plus web chat board and a guest book. No banners. FTP feature.

AOL Hometown. Provides members 12 MB of Web space for your personal or business site. A banner is displayed on your pages. FTP feature.

Angelfire. Provides members 50 MB free web space. A banner is displayed on your pages. FTP feature.

Byethost. Free plans for professional web hosting services providing minimum 250MB disk space, 6GB traffic, PHP 5, 3 MySQL databases, POP3, FTP, mail filters, access and error logs, almost unlimited features for affordable paid plans.

DJCafe. DJ Cafe provides members 5 MB free Web space to start (more on request), guest book, free forum/message board, page counters, Real Audio Server, Microsoft Frontpage 98 Extensions, SSI, and custom CGI scripts.

Dreamwater. Provides members 50 MB free Web space (and more if you need it!), plus Free Guest book Chat Board, form E-mail, Web page builder, Web page Templates and clip art. No FTP feature.

Doteasy.com. Provides members 20 MB free Web space, plus unlimited E-mail accounts (user@yourdomain.com), POP & Web-based E-mail access, E-mail forwarding, and autoresponder. FTP feature. No banners or pop-up ads. You must have an existing domain name or buy one.

Free hostia.com. Provides members 250 MB space, five GB bandwidth (should be adequate) and one domain hosted. A banner is displayed on your pages. FTP access.

Free webservices.net. Provides members 10 MB of space no banner ads. Also, offers free guestbook, a message board and online forms. FTP access.

Fortune City. Provides members 100 MB of free web space. A banner is displayed on your pages. FTP feature.

Free Servers. Provides members 20 MB of Web space. Free subdomain and domain hosting. A banner is displayed on your pages. FTP feature.

Freespaces.com. Free web hosting services, unlimited bandwidth, storage and advanced site creation tool . FTP feature.

Freewebs.com. Provides members 100 MB of free web space. No banner ads or popups, Website Builder. FTP feature.

GeoCities. Provides members 15 MB of free web space. A banner is displayed on your pages. FTP feature.

HowdyNeighbor. Provides 2 MB free for personal use only. You must provide a link back by displaying a small image on your home page. FTP feature.

i6Networks. Provides free web hosting, free email, free cgi-bin and free support for small business owners. No banner ads or popups. FTP feature.

Kabissa.org. Space for change in Africa. Provides 10 MB of free space for African non-profit organizations. Subdomain and domain hosting available at nominal rates.

KidsSportsNet.com. Designed for children 13 years and older to create a Website for themselves, their team, or their league. No FTP feature.

Photo Storage. Only want to store some photos on-line? These sites will store your photos/pictures online for easy viewing for free.

SpacePorts. Provides 1 MB of free Web space. Additional space is allowed, but you have to apply for it. A banner is displayed on your index page. FTP feature.

Sphosting. Provides members 35 MB of Web space for your personal use. A banner is displayed on each page. You can add a guestbook, counter and more. No FTP feature.

Synced.org. Provides members 250 MB of Web space for your personal use. 15 GB Bandwidth (can be upgraded once approved). A banner is displayed on each page. FTP feature.

Tripod. Provides members 20 MB of free web space. A banner is displayed on your pages. CGI-BIN access. A banner is displayed on each page.No FTP feature.
