On every page of your Website, your visitors will ask themselves two basic questions: "Where am I?" and "Where can I go next?"
You must answer them by providing a system to navigate your site. For this you can use any navigation systems outlined below:
- Simple text links (shown below) are the easiest way for most sites.
- A navigation bar the next best method, followed by the use of graphic buttons.
- An image map is the most difficult method to create.
But remember, getting your message across is the most important goal for any Webmaster. See the guidelines below on creating your navigation system:
- Your navigation system should be repeated on every page in
the site, and can be located at the top, left, right or bottom of
your page.
- Which ever navigation system you use it should be easy to
understand, use, and is consistent throughout your site.
- Your navigation system should give your visitor a clue as to
what page of the site they are currently on and where they can go next.
- Commonly recognized icons like a small house (representing
"home"), arrows (for back and next) , or a letter (for E-mail)
can be used in conjunction with your hyperlinks or a navigation
system. To avoid confusion, use only those icons that have World
wide acceptance.
- For Websites with 10 or more pages, I also recommend you
provide a site map.
